TO RUMINATE ABOUT MY LIFE;

ultra wide test photos

with 32 comments

Obviously by the title you can tell I made a decision & purchase of a wide angle lens. After numerous discussions with fellow photographers, bloggers & staff at DCW, I decided to go with the Nikkor Lens AF-S DX 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5G ED. I haven’t had time to really experiment with my new lens as we got home rather late in the day yesterday but these are some ‘test’ photos. (The weather was so awesome yesterday, I got burnt! Yeeeow, finally some colour into my skin)

Aperture:f/3.5 / Exposure time:1/30 sec / ISO speed:200 / Focal length:10mm / Lens: Nikkor 10-24mm AF-S DX G ED

Aperture:f/10 / Exposure time:1/200 sec / ISO speed:200 / Focal length:10mm / Lens: Nikkor 10-24mm AF-S DX G ED

Aperture:f/9 / Exposure time:1/160 sec / ISO speed:200 / Focal length:16mm / Lens: Nikkor 10-24mm AF-S DX G ED

Aperture:f/10 / Exposure time:1/200 sec / ISO speed:200 / Focal length:10mm / Lens: Nikkor 10-24mm AF-S DX G ED

Aperture:f/11 / Exposure time:1/640 sec / ISO speed:200 / Focal length:24mm / Lens: Nikkor 10-24mm AF-S DX G ED

Aperture:f/9 / Exposure time:1/100 sec / ISO speed:1000 / Focal length:116mm / Lens: Nikkor 10-24mm AF-S DX G ED

Aperture:f/13 / Exposure time:1/800 sec / ISO speed:200 / Focal length:10mm / Lens: Nikkor 10-24mm AF-S DX G ED

Aperture:f/13 / Exposure time:1/1250 sec / ISO speed:200 / Focal length:10mm / Lens: Nikkor 10-24mm AF-S DX G ED

I also tried a panorama stitch using my ultra wide lens; 7 stitch photograph. I love the curve of the land/water to the right, this cliff face is actually very straight! (click to see larger version)

These are my Sunday Stills selections for landscapes/spring; spring is bright blue clear skies, green foliage, warm sunshine.

Aperture:f/10/ Exposure time:1/200 sec / ISO speed:200 / Focal length:15mm / Lens: Nikkor 10-24mm AF-S DX G ED

Aperture:f/10 / Exposure time:1/200 sec / ISO speed:200 / Focal length:15mm / Lens: Nikkor 10-24mm AF-S DX G ED

Aperture:f/9 / Exposure time:1/500 sec / ISO speed:200 / Focal length:14mm / Lens: Nikkor 10-24mm AF-S DX G ED

I also tested out the Nikkor 50mm & 35mm prime lenses on my D90. I discussed why the 50mm is too “long” for the D90 & decided on, after playing that I would love to buy the 35mm.
It’s so simple to use, the photos are awesome it works amazingly in very low light & is super fast on my camera. But after almost spending two weeks wage on my ultra wide, I think I’ll hold off on spending for a little while :)

  1. I love them, Chloe! My favorite is the second one, because among all the other stunning details in the photo [which is one of the awesome pluses of wide angle lens] you can also see your shade on the ground holding the camera and I find the effect wonderful.

  6. Your shots of the clear water are awesome!
I still haven’t decided on what camera to get yet, but a wide angle is a must. I must do more research.

  7. Nice work Chloe and that lens look great although these are small web versions of course, it still looks sharp, great contrast and colour and clarity.

You should now do a lot of experiments with wideangle and cropping – shooting wideangle can often mean you get a lot of sky or foreground and cropping these can give you a really nice dramatic result. Also you will find that shooting wide angle it’s quite easy to tilt the horizon as you cover such a wide view. Look forward to seeing more!

  17. So what are they looking up at?
These are all great, but I kept thinking what a funny photo I’d make if I used a wide angle lens on my daschund pup. lol! Can you say….’Ultra-Stretch?!” hehe!

Good job. Looks like you had fun.

  19. There’s those water pics I’ve been requesting for quite some time!!! BEAUTIFUL… Truly beautiful. I think the ocean, and pretty much any body of water is amazing. I don’t live on the coast, so vacation time is the only time I can see the ocean. There are alot of nice lakes around where I live, but not like the ocean. You can see the other side of most of the lakes, and I think that’s what is so amazing about the ocean… You look out and only see water as far as the horizon. The Great Lakes are directly on top of Indiana and you can’t see across those, but that’s about the only big ones. Looking at those pics made my depression level drop a few notches… Thanks Chloe…

  20. BTW… I love to play pool! (You guys probably call it billiards, right?) I’m actually really good at it. I use to play in the leagues around here. I seen where you were bragging about how nice the weather was there yesterday… And even though I consider myself a gentleman, I’m giving you the middle finger right now! LOL!! The weather sucks here. It’s actually sunny today, but it’s a lil chilly. I got sunburned yesterday too… BUT FROM THE TANNING BED! Take care babe! I’ll check out your “Macro Mondays” tomorrow. Just outta curiousity… What does macro mean?

  23. wonderful shots Chloe. I can’t wait to see what you come up with using the new lens!

Why do you think the 50mm is too long for the D90? Is it something specific? Just wondering….maybe I missed something.

  32. Hey girl! Good choice on the wide angle lens! You have been shooting quite a bit lately—having your macro and a wide opens up so many more creative posssibilities, doesn’t it?

It seems so odd seeing you on a Jetski when here it is fall and it’s rainy on the east coast of the U.S.! Makes me yearn for summer again!
