TO RUMINATE ABOUT MY LIFE;

sometimes all you need is a little help

with 24 comments

I’ve had a play in CS3, familiarising myself with how it works (because up until now all I could do was create a border & add text). I don’t have a manual to follow because *cough, cough* my aunty didn’t necessarily buy it. So, I’ve been searching the net for ‘how to’ pages, coming up with nothing useful.
Here are some photographs I’ve played with in CS3, some adjustments are subtle, others are obvious & I think I’ll learn to enjoy this program.
I loved how this one turned out, it’s got that old world feel to it. (The next two photographs are from the collection of the first photographs I took with my D90.)

You can see the original of this one @
equestrian competition

All these needed was ‘auto contrast’ & ‘auto colour’.

See the originals @
the city life

I softened this photograph & adjusted the contrast a little.

I’m excited for a culture shock, a history lesson & experience adventure.

  2. Always good to have your comments,
3am.It was 5 photos, it was cold in there..but we were having a cup of coffee and was enjoying the breeze. Looking at that pic I hope the viewers get the same feeling too..
Cader Idris is 4 photos, Aber was also a combo of 4 snaps. I know the feel of that place is so heavenly. the sound of the stream adds to the ambience. Its not that hard to take panos..You just need to take snaps with 50-25% overlap, so that it will fit as a single shot in the end. Its not that hard to hold the camer and turn a little bit to take another one and another and go on…You can even try a 360 degree pano too. but 360s are not that great to see i the pc screen.
The newport is actually of 12 shots. I know..but some how i got it perfect. I love the way that photo looks and feels!! You shud perfect ur skills on panos before you leave to china. You can use photoshop to join these photos but, I would recommend a pro panoramic software like this one
    http://www.arcsoft.com/public/software_title.asp?ProductID=2&dyContent=LANG_DOWNLOAD#submenu
Arcsoft is very easy to use. Panorama factory is also a good choice. Lemme know if you need this software, I can help you with that.
Standing on the edge. That angle really gives an abseiling feel, but I was not abseiling, i had two of my friends holding me from behind as I was leaning forward. Cool ha! :D
I love those roses. The first photo is a very good one. you’ve opened the door to endless creativity. Good Luck! I can see that you are doing a lot of homework for china and hongkong. Thats the way to do it. If you are looking for a culture shock and history..then I think you shud consider India. You’ll understand what ‘unity in diversity’ really means!

  3. Hi Chloë. Welcome to the world of CS3! It’s a briliant tool to work, even as you say, sometimes just a little bit. The possibilities are endless and I hope you enjoy experimenting with CS3. More than following tutorials that, don’t get me wrong, are usually really good, experimenting different things is so much better imo. Can’t wait to see your results. xxx

  7. I like the first one a lot- really effective processing. Reminds of my own lo-fi film phase (which ended. . . on Thursday).

I’m really not much of a brand snob (I chose Pentax over Nikon and Canon the first time around), and I can honestly say that I am not a fan of the D40/D40X/D60 line (which is why I bought a K100D for my first digital SLR). To be fair, I don’t like the Digital Rebels much either. When it came to buying this one, there were only two camera companies that made bodies that met my expectations for the camera that will replace this one (probably a D700, but not until the D800s or D900s come out and the D700 fall below $1000 US used, which is exactly how I got the D200, which cost me 1/3 of what they sold for when they first came out). Canon’s stuff in my price range just wasn’t impressive. If it had been a 5D Mk I vs a D300, there might have been a decision there.

  12. Nice snaps. I particularly like the one of the horses head – very professional looking. BTW, CS4 is out I believe and its a lot easier to use because it has docked windows. I always used to get lost with those ones floating all over the place.

  14. Hey Chloe!

Good job on adding some “oomph” to your firework shots. I know you’re happier with them now! I have some older DVDs for Photoshop CS that I’d be happy to mail to you. You won’t learn the very latest features of CS3, but many of the basic Photoshop techniques will be covered (layers, channels, etc.). E-mail me your mailing address and I’ll send you some training stuff!

  15. Oh, yeah….forgot to mention that the horse’s head shot is excellent. I agree with David@SEM Labs—it is a professional looking shot!

  16. hey! just stopping by. love your photos.. i’m a self taught photographer too… trying to learn how to use my d300 … ahh! but, photoshop took a couple months, but one day it’ll all click. up until that point you’ll probably be confused as heck.

    great job though!

  18. Hi hows it going. I have a copy of CS3 here that doesn’t have a manual – maybe me and your Auntie brought it from the same place. I can only do the bare minimum in Photoshop at the best of times so would love if you do find some decent documentation a link.

p.s hope your well – and Im so excited for Austeralia

  20. I just cleaned out my spam folder (for the first time ever. . .) and found all of your comments (I approved one figuring you wouldn’t want all five anyway). I’ll keep a better eye on my spam folder in the future.

As for PhotoShop, I am pretty much no help. I use GIMP because it’s free, and I don’t way to pay for Photoshop or steal it. I can tell you to learn Levels and Curves- those are tremendously useful tools.

  21. Yes. Come to think of it, I may have authorized one of the profane ones. Oh well, more color!

I have four roommates (two male, two female) in a big apartment. I love having all of them- never a dull moment! We share a decent amount, and even have “family dinners” of some sort on a fairly regular basis. Of course, this is only at school.

Have you seen the Strobist blog? Since apparently links are causing all sorts of havoc with comments, try Googling “strobist” and following the link to the Strobist Blogspot page. “Lighting 101″ is great info on portrait lighting using portable hotshoe flashes. Some people love the method and some hate it, but the results are hard to argue with. This is what I plan on following once I buy some better lighting gear.

The shutter shades are “shutter shades” here too. Adding a goofy accessory can make people less uncomfortable, and make the results a little more interesting.

Come to think of it, there is one roommate I might be willing to send down to Australia. You can keep her.

I love how the color changed on the first pic, it’s classic and somehow makes me feel like I’m there.. ;)

  24. Hey, I love your all your pictures. I can spend hours scrolling through them and never get bored. I’ve always been so motivated towards photography, I really want to be able to take good photos. Did you do any effects to any of your pictures? The saturation in the city photos look’s really high. Don’t ever give up on photography ….you take unbelievable photos! How long have you been interested? I’ve been looking into getting a camera like yours..
