TO RUMINATE ABOUT MY LIFE;

the city life

with 21 comments

Paige & I headed to moomba waterfest in the city Saturday night to take some photographs of the fireworks & surrounds. It was a little bit cold & the breeze didn’t help(?) The first (6) fireworks were duds, they just exploded into grey smoke & made people cough. They kind of ruined the effect of the fireworks that went off after these but the atmosphere was still nice. I took my tripod with the intention of using it for very sharp/clear photographs, however with the crowd of people & the amount of people that do push & try to stand in front of you, it proved too difficult. So, [ALL] of these are hand held & shot in manual focus mode;

I’m not really a “rides person” so this particular one made me feel ill:

P.s I understand these aren’t the ‘best quality’ my camera can produce; so any feedback & guidence would really be appreciated. x

  1. Beautiful pictures Chloe!!! Although it’s hard for them to compare to the pic you have posted of yourself next to them!!! That is by far my favorite, and not just because it’s kinda revealing of your body… Well maybe just a lil bit! LOL! You really do look absolutely beautiful in that pic other than the cleavage. I hope all is well in your life. I’ve left you a few comments but haven’t heard back from you. I hope you aren’t upset with me over anything! Til later baby…

  6. Hi Chloe, Those photographs are nice! It’s kind of hard to avoid the smoke “aftereffect” in fireworks, unless you’re really far away. You got some really nice city reflection shots before the fireworks series. I also think that it could have been a) the kind of fireworks and b) being shot over the water, perhaps. I noticed in the first few shots there is hardly any smoke. The smoke really only starts to show (in large amounts) in the latter photos. I don’t think there was any way you could have avoided the smoke-filled shots, so it’s not your technical problem—-it’s most likely in how the fireworks were launched, what they were composed of, the haze in the atmosphere, maybe. Handholding wasn’t the problem—the photos are fairly sharp— I don’t think you could have done better given the quality of the fireworks and all that haze. They might have been shooting off too many at once. Were you fairly close to the fireworks area? Here’s a neat trick you might like to play with. Set your D90 on manual so you can control the shutter speed and aperture. Handhold very steady if you can change it to something like 1/15 or lower speed (better yet, use a tripod), then shoot the rides as they’re spinning. You can get some really cool bright blurry lights when you do that. Carnival rides at night are great for doing that type of shot. Your carnival rides shots and reflective skyline shots are nice!

  7. I have to say it is very impressive work, considering that you couldn’t use your tripod. Done the same some years ago, my firework shots were really poor apart from a couple. Nothing like taking a deep breath and hold it before you shoot :) But nothing you don’t know already, i really like this series.

  9. Now is the time that I confess that I certainly know very little about photography since I couldn’t tell at all that these aren’t the best your camera can take (as you mentioned). I think they’re gorgeous :)
    My favourites are the third from the bottom with the tall buildings and the one with the pink fireworks. The fireworks are amazing, btw. They look like someone took a handful of glowing dust and tossed it into the air :)
    I hope you went on some of the rides *grins*
    And that your weekend was enjoyable :)

  10. Chloé! I love your cityscape photographs on this post! They are so beautiful with the contrasting water reflections. It looks like you had a ton of fun!

    I am so happy that you liked my blog about the Chloé runway! It soo reminded me of you when I created it and I think that it is just fantastic that you were named after the Chloé perfume! You’ll always carry around a little bit of designer all through your life!

  11. Hello beautiful!!! I just wanted to let you know that I just put up a new post. I just jotted it down in about 15 minutes, so it isn’t my best work. I haven’t written anything in so long that I felt obligated to post something. I’ve had ALOT of emotions going through my head lately, which I’m sure you will be able to tell. PLEASE let me know what you think… AND BE HONEST!!! I know that I can touch it up and put some final touches on it, but I just wanted to write something new and sincere. That is ALOT of love and emotion put into 16 lines. I hope my sincerety comes across and I hope you can feel my love and passion. Let me know if you like… and if you don’t let me know what you don’t like so I can change it. BYE BABY…

  17. RYN: I’ve finally started to get the hang of it after about hm well three hours or so :/ I keep sending my sims a bit nutty because I don’t shower them fast enough and stuff like that and then they all start crying. Oh and instead of getting them all to hook up I seem to keep destroying their relationships.

  18. First of all…love the city shots!!

    Out of curiosity, what shutter speeds were you using? For me, the best fireworks have been with a shutter speed of 5secs. That way you get the full streak of light, rather than a trail of smoke with a spark at the end, and several bursts of different colours in each shot. Oh, and I think the smoke in the pink one really adds to the shot :)

  21. Great shots- sometimes I think knowing what to shoot (and finding these things) is ninety percent of the battle.

    I really like the sixth. Did you desaturate the buildings and the water, or were they really that gray? Regardless, it looks really good. I think it would make a nice print as well- you’d be able to see all the details.

    Thank you for the compliments as well. If I only wrote one line a month and posted one photo, it would be good and the words would be profound.

    I think I’ll be picking up the 35mm f/1.8 and the 50mm f/1.8 to get started in Nikon glass. Not as versatile as a zoom, but sharper and faster. Film has made me fall in love with primes.

    Who knows what the newlyweds were up to- it was St. Patrick’s day, so probably nothing good.
