TO RUMINATE ABOUT MY LIFE;

speed & night photography

with 27 comments

Tonight was the first night I had energy after work to get out & experiment with photography at night. This being my first attempt, I know I did well.

sorry for the slight tilt on this one, it was a hand shot;

At 9.30pm my dad & I set out to a bridge over the freeway. I worked out the best position, set up my tripod, set the shutter speed, ISO & aperture & along came a lot of traffic.

round about, an interesting subject;

“anything you can do, I can do better”

  3. Hi Chloe,

    i can see you are really enjoying you new camera, it is an important stimulus, but photo is passion and you have that passion and the curiosity of try new things, that`s great.

    I prefer the second one “is not so centered” and fourth, but suggested a higher opening and a lower speed trying to get the same light of the handrail and knock the lights of cars.
    The larger(in number) the opening the greater the effect of star lights.
    Check diferent frames you will be surprised

    Thank you for visiting me

  4. I really liked those shots C, :D nice to see the art is not lost.

    I’m not sure if the person will read the post and if they don’t will never understand. But I need to do it this way

  6. Ooh, this are beautiful. Night is the most beautiful thing in the world. Where did you stand to get those shots that looked to be from above? A bridge or something(?). And, sorry, maybe this is a weird question, but isn’t it sort of dangerous to be out on roads at night, taking photos?
    Ah yes, I really need to start writing again. I think it’s like you would be if you didn’t have a camera: everywhere you look you see gorgeous pictures that you can’t take. Well, it’s like that to me atm, except that my missing equipment is time and my result is writing.
    Hear from you soon :)

  7. I love photographs like this! My man has always wanted to do this sort of trial with the lights on a freeway [he's a photo-man like you] but has never found a good place to manage it.
    I loved the roundabout photo especially, the effect of that is incredible!!

  8. I love the fourth- the tones are darker and more menacing than the others, and the unique perspective really adds something to the concept. The blue tones in the sky are great as well. I would love to see this stopped down more and with a longer exposure to turn the slightly blurred cars into long white trails. Shooting at f/16 would have slowed your shutter to around eight seconds (roughly- within 1/3 of a stop either way), but I do think you absolutely nailed the exposure.

    My favorites are the ones where the sky is exposed in in nice blue tones (I love the sky right after sunset. It’s definitely the most cohesive element of my landscapes, but it’s deceptively hard to capture. It comes and goes in only a few minutes).

    Nice job for a first time shooting this style. I would be really interested to see you try more atypical compositions like the fourth in the future. Nice work!

  9. Chloé! These photos are stunning! I am a huge fan of the slow shutter speed with the cars. I loove them all! Keep it up, girl!

  10. 1 and 2 are my faves, particularly 2 as I love a blue night’s sky! The only bits of advice I’d give are to try some tighter crops (I think a tight crop to the start of the light trails on pic 5 including the sign on the left would make a nice pic) and think about where you want the viewer’s eye to focus when you compose a shot, once you settle on that try to lead the eye to that point and avoid distractions.

    Great pics and only 2 months in, I look forward to your shots in 12 months time. Keep snapping!

  14. Hi!
    Those pics are really great. I like the 2nd one, it combines the beauty of nature and the hectic fast life we’re going through.

  17. Yup, thank you for the heads up. I needed it, else I probably would’ve avoided posting for ages longer.
    We also call it a freeway.
    I think ir’s really cool that your first thought isn’t about safety. That’s sort of dangerous here, but cool that you dont have to worry.
    And thank you for reading Body Art :) I have the feeling that I’m going to have to let everyone else who only read my poetry know that I’ve started posting again or else they won’t notice :P.
    *hugs*

  20. WOW!!! I’m loving the new pic of you… Not trying to be too forward, but your body is pretty AMAZING!!! How have you been??? I hope good. I’m doing well, but I’m starting to get an idea of how hectic things are gonna be trying to juggle school, work, and raising my son… And on top of that I met someone that I ACTUALLY LIKE… I know, wierd, huh? She is so amazing but I feel like I don’t have enough time trying to date her on top of everything else. To be honest, she kinda reminds me of you. You 2 resemble each other quite a bit. I love the new pics, especially the ones with the tracer lights… Very cool and good job. I love reading about your relationship too. It makes me feel good to know that 2 people can be so happy and “in love” with each other. I’m a huge romantic and it just gives me hope and something to look forward to. It seems like every friend I have that is in a relationship is just totally miserable and that’s no way to live. I’m very happy for you. Take care babe and chat back when you get a minute. Til then…

  21. Not trying to sound like your Father, but you should be more careful being so descriptive of where you live! You gotta be crazy baby! Either that or you don’t have a clue how gorgeous you really are! I know you aren’t worried about me, but there are ALOT of really wierd people out there that are just looking for someone as beautiful as you to stalk. I don’t wanna see anything happen to you. I know it isn’t my place, but I just worry about you. Once again, SORRY. I know that you are a big girl that is capable of making decisions on your own. I just don’t know what I’d do if something happened to you. Chat with you later…

  25. Night scenes have a mystique beauty – if only I could capture its beauty – as you have.

    Delightful photo’s.

  26. Thanks for the lovely compliment. My goal is to be a better photographer than I was last year, and I think it’s pretty tough for any of us not to succeed at that. With every season that passes I know more about this strange and beautiful art form, and last season always seems like forever ago in terms of knowledge and ability. May you always walk forward in your work, whether giant leaps or baby steps. That’s the best photographer blessing I can think of.

    I actually changed my mind on that one again- I like the subtle blur of the headlights better in that particular example. It somehow reminds me of the nighttime driving scene in “Psycho,” which I really hope you’ve seen. What would happen if you cropped it so the vanishing point of the sidewalk/guard rail was in the center (horizontally speaking- it would still be below the center vertically). It would lead you toward square format as well, probably my favorite aspect ratio. Let me see it if you give it a try- I’m curious.

  27. Yes, we really like our hoodies over here (not always white though). It actually was snowing that day, but if you;re referring to the “speckled” appearance all over, it’s grain in the negative. In this case, it’s a direct result of the cross process (processing the film in the wrong chemistry). This particular combination yields color shifts, huge contrast, saturation, sharpness, and grain. If you set your D90 to max ISO (6400?) and then shoot a scene with some underexposure, you’ll notice a similar effect (called “noise” on a digital sensor), but many say that authentic film grain is more attractive than digital noise. It’s a personal preference. If you;re interested, here’s the original scan before the conversion:

    http://img114.imageshack.us/img114/764/topdowncolor.jpg

    You can still see the speckly grain effect here. I chose to go monochrome with most of these because the color shifts apparently happen more drastically in overexposed and brightly colored areas, and shooting on a dark snowy day didn’t give me either- the colors are just a little ugly. I have six more rolls of this film and plan to keep experimenting.
