monochrome/manual ISO
It’s been a week since I picked up my D90 & honestly, I was having withdrawals. I find myself thinking about photography every other second in the day. Although my D90 doesn’t shoot black & white photographs, inside the magnificent machine you can convert photographs you’ve taken to monochrome. Today I did just that; I put on my 18-55mm lens, my 4x magnification hoya filter & set about my house. These are my test photographs, they have a fair amount of noise in them as the ISO was manually set to 800.

Nice little set of everyday things. I’m not sure if you’re looking for advice or not but mine would be to either use available light for these or if you have no tripod for the longer exposures then dialing the flash way down and using a diffuser. The glare it makes is somewhat distracting and takes away from the detail in black and white. Just a tip, hope that doesn’t offend.

Hey Chloe, fellow Alex-fan :).
I absolutely love the photographs in this post – I love the effects of the light going through the bottles and the water like that. Truly beautiful!

“these ones can switch lenses, dont worry about it.
at broadway camera
50d: 1742
40d: 1000
17-55: 1250
actually, get the 40d. the improvements in the 50d arent worth that price differwnce.”
also my buddy has a set of tables and he put together this set. check it out and let me know what you think. its very latin, south american sounding. he’s a mehicano.

Hie Chloé!!
Glad to receive ur comments…
Regarding ur query as to how I did the selective coloring thing… I have used PhotoShop for that….
Created 2 layers of the pic… kept the background one as it is and made the top layer monochrome… then used the Lasso tool/Magic Wand to select the areas that I want to work on.
Once u select the area u can delete/cut the monochrome parts and the background colored pixels will appear… giving u the selective coloring effect… then u can merge both the layers and after some processing u r done!!
It easier to do than to explain… and I am just a newbie :)
Your blog has something new everytime I visit and it keeps me interested ;-)
Thanks for the wishes for my D-day… will surely send an invite Down Under!! haha lolz
Just abt managed to write a new blog post… after a long long time… :)
Have a great time and keep connected!!

Hm. The Kiss my Grass page seems to have disappeared. Oh well, I’ll just post the comment I planned on leaving here, there with this one.
Chloe :)
lol, it looks like you guys had a helluva time. It was a smart move to go early. *grins*
I love that first pic of you twp with the lollipops. It’s really cute. And the first photo with you all together should be framed or something. It’s very sweet :)
I’m fine thank you, just buried in work. I barely have time for anything :P. It should change in a few days, though.
Ooh, that tap is simply gorgeous. Water in black and white has always fascinated me and even better when it’s moving. This is definitely one of my all-time favourites :)

And, btw, I still love that effect where you focus on one sentence of words and then blur the rest. *grins*

I like the book one. Excellent job using the depth of field to accentuate a particular sentence.
As a certifiable black and white junkie, I can tell you that your best bet for digital black and white is to shoot in color and leave it in color until you get the image onto your computer (what software are you using for post-processing, by the way?). Not all black and white images are created equal- black and white photographers shooting film often use/used colored filters to adjust the amount of each color that made it into the black and white image. With the advent of digital, you can do all of this color mixing in software. I know Photoshop and Lightroom let you do this to a great extent, and I am sure there are others. Doing your conversions in post can really open up new worlds of black and white.

The way you took the pictures, to make the most out of normal things is really impressive. The best of the lot is obviously the book. The words you have focused on makes it more special. Where did you find that book? Beautiful! Actually that photo made all other photos look ordinary.
